4 Lessons We Can Learn From Mary Poppins

Inspired by P. L. Travers’ Mary Poppins book series, the film adaptation captured many hearts around the world. Mary Poppins, played by Julie Andrews, is a magical woman who responds to an advertisement to be a nanny for the Banks children. Mr. Banks, the children’s father, advertised for a stern nanny, but his children had other plans. They created their own advertisement for a kind nanny, and so, Mary Poppins appeared. Her sweet personality taught us all many things, so here are the top 4:

1. Add some fun to your life

Mary Poppins teaches the children in the movie to add some fun to mundane, everyday tasks. “In every job that must be done, there is an element of fun. You find the fun, and SNAP! The job’s a game!” That quote resonates with them and they eventually find some fun in tidying up. We could all use that as inspiration in our own lives!

2. Learn to laugh

Throughout the movie, you quickly find out that Mary Poppins believes in the power of laughter and joy. You can find her smiling joyfully in almost all of her scenes. We can all agree that laughing makes us feel good, so why not try to look at life as she does?

3. Don’t judge a book by its cover

As we all know, we’re experts at judging. If we take a look at Mary Poppins, however, she didn’t seem like much at first. As time went on, the other characters found out just how special she was. Her quick wit, positive attitude, and of course, her magical capabilities all make up who she is. Just by looking at her, you wouldn’t really know. Judgment is part of human nature, but as long as we take the time to get to know people, we’re doing just fine.

4. Stand your ground

Although Mary Poppins is a kind and caring, she also exudes confidence and sternness in her own way. When Mr. Banks confronts her about her actions and demands an explanation, she simply responds: "First of all, I would like to make one thing quite clear...I never explain anything." She stands her ground, especially knowing that not everyone will understand her unique style of doing things.

There are many more things Mary Poppins can teach us, but you can watch the movie to find out what they are. If you wanted a different look on Mary Poppins, try reading the books series. The character is the polar opposite of the one in the movie. She’s strict, and a tad too serious, but there are some things that she can teach us as well! On www.funtides.com, you can find that and more!
